Will GTA VI be on Nintendos next console?

After a decade of wait, Rockstar Games has finally unveiled the first footage of GTA VI, the highly anticipated follow-up to one of the most successful games in history: GTA V. There are still many unanswered questions even after watching the first game trailer in action. One of the biggest questions is whether Rockstar intends to release GTA VI on the Switch 2, Nintendo’s upcoming console. Rockstar has never before launched a new GTA game on a Nintendo console, but with the launch of Nintendo’s next-gen console expected to somewhat coincide with the release window of GTA VI, there is a possibility that Rockstar and Nintendo have decided to team up for their releases.

Could we see GTA VI released on Nintendo Switch 2?

It is currently uncertain whether GTA VI will be available on the Nintendo Switch 2. Neither Rockstar nor Nintendo has yet confirmed any such plans. It is, however, confirmed that the game will be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X, and later on PC.

Rockstar Games is very well known for creating highly ambitious games that require a lot of power out of gaming consoles. On the other hand, Nintendo has always focused on creating consoles that are less powerful, but more innovative. If Nintendo continues to follow its previous approach, it is unlikely that the Switch 2 will have enough power to match the true potential of GTA VI.

Digital Foundry has released a Q&A video where they discuss the possibility of GTA VI coming to the Switch 2. According to their analysis, the Switch 2 may not have the necessary hardware capabilities to run GTA VI, making it highly unlikely for the game to be released on the platform.

However, Nintendo has not yet disclosed the power of Switch 2, leaving every detail about the console up in the air. If the rumors are true, the Switch 2 might have enough power to compete with Xbox One and PlayStation 4. In case Rockstar decides to release GTA VI on the previous generation consoles, as they have done with previous GTA releases, there is a possibility that they are planning to make it available on Switch 2 as well.

Why would GTA VI be on the Switch 2?

Nintendo and Rockstar Games have not had the strongest relationship in the past. Although a few of Rockstar’s games have been developed for Nintendo consoles, their partnership could be improved. However, in recent years, Rockstar has released more big titles on Nintendo’s consoles, such as the GTA III trilogy and, most recently, Red Dead Redemption. This could be evidence that their relationship is becoming stronger.

Former Nintendo of America employees Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang have stated on their YouTube channel that Nintendo has expressed big interest in having Rockstar titles on their consoles in the past. Rockstar has been one of the few companies big enough to convince Nintendo to relax its sometimes restrictive guidelines.

To boost sales of the upcoming Switch 2, it would be a smart strategy for Nintendo to secure a highly anticipated title like GTA VI for their platform, just like they did with titles such as Skyrim during the release of the original Switch back in 2017. This would encourage players to choose the Switch 2 over competitors’ consoles when playing the next GTA.

GTA VI is confirmed by Rockstar to be released sometime in 2025, while Nintendo’s next console is expected sometime this year. As we get closer to both individual launches, we might get some new information on the topic.
