Earlier today Sony announced that PlayStation 5 is getting a new model and that it will be released this holiday.

It has been speculated that Sony would release a slim model of PlayStation 5 this year, just like they did with PlayStation 4. But that does not look to be the case. Not exactly. Sony clarifies that this model is not a new one that will be in addition to their current PlayStation 5, but rather a replacement. In their own words:

The new PS5 model will be available starting this November in the U.S. at select local retailers and direct.playstation.com where available. It will continue to roll out globally in the following months. Once inventory of the current PS5 model has sold out, the new PS5 will become the only model available.

Smaller but bigger

The new model is going to be 30% smaller and up to 24% lighter than its previous model. The storage is going to be a 1TB SSD, and there is going to be an attachable Ultra HD Blu-Ray disc drive. This is a Blu-Ray disc drive that you can buy for 80 USD separately from the console and attach it to a digital version of the PlayStation 5.

The new model is going to be available in the U.S this November and start rolling out globally in the coming months. The recommended retail price starts at 499.99 USD in the US for the disc version and 449.99 USD for the digital version.
