This guide does contain some minor spoilers of the game, so proceed with caution.
How to borrow horses for free
Once you’ve completed the game’s first dungeon, Sulthorn Ruins, you will be able to travel to Hyrule Ranch, located west of Castle Town, where you will find a man. He will give you a side quest named Runaway Horse when you talk to him. The quest requires you to travel southwest of the farm (it’s very close) and retrieve a horse that has fled the farm.
You will find the horse stuck on a tiny landmass surrounded by water. Use an echo, such as the bed echo, to create a path for the horse. Mount the horse and ride it back to the ranch. Once you’ve returned the horse to the man, he will let you borrow any horse for free. You can even change your horse at any time. If you leave your horse, you will be able to see where you left it on your map.
Get your own horse
To get your own horse, you need to have completed the first four dungeons of the game and talked to the king after he has been saved from the rift covering the castle.
In the throne room, talk to Impa. She will give you a side quest that requires you to go to the ranch west of Castle Town.
Once you’re there, talk to the lady with blonde curly hair located in the west of the ranch. A girl will come running in from the north, explaining that the horse you were supposed to be given to you has been pulled into a rift. Go northeast up to the carrot farm, and you will see a rift in the middle of the crops.
Enter the rift by walking up to it and pressing A. Once you’re inside the rift and have explored it a bit, you can see the horse petrified and unable to move. Recover all the fairies inside the rift to save it.
But once you’re outside again, it seems the horse has run off, so you will need to use your bind ability to pull one of the carrots out of the ground to make the horse come running back to you.
Once you’ve done this, you’ve completed the quest and the horse is officially yours. Remember to learn the carrot echo when you’re done. The carrot will make your horse come to you if you are too far away from it.
